Профессиональные медицинские ассоциации, такие как Европейское общество кардиологов (ЕОК), оказывают в этом поддержку врачам. Хотя стоимость непрерывного медицинского образования (НМО) в Европе недостаточно финансово обеспечена правительствами и работодателями, медицинские ассоциации были подвергнуты критике за принятие альтернативной финансовой поддержки от медицинской промышленности. Медицинское образование и обучение проведению исследований включают получение знаний, нужных для оценки качества и надежности информации. При любой форме распространения научной информации существует некоторый риск систематических ошибок, в том числе интеллектуальных, профессиональных или связанных с финансированием, которые должны быть учтены. Последние, что особенно актуально, должны быть выявлены путем полного раскрытия информации о финансировании. Необходимо тесное сотрудничество между исследователями фундаментальных и клинических проблем в академических институтах, с одной стороны, и инженерами и учеными из научно-исследовательских подразделений фармацевтических компаний и компаний, производящих медицинские устройства, с другой. Это очень важно при разработке новых методов диагностики и лечения, так как содействие производителей может ускорить их внедрение в клиническую практику. Университеты теперь часто призывают своих сотрудников к защите интеллектуальной собственности и коммерциализации своих исследований. Таким образом, мишенью для критики являются не коммерческая деятельность или финансовые связи как таковые, но осознаваемое влияние коммерческих предприятий на принятие клинических решений или официальные рекомендации профессиональных медицинских организаций.
