Sergei V. Shalaev – MD, PhD, Professor, Honored Scientist of Russia, Head of the Tyumen Regional Center of the Heart and Blood Vessels; Head of the Chair of Cardiology with the Course of Emergency Medical Care at Tyumen State Medical University; Chief-Cardiologist of the Ural Federal District and the Tyumen Region.
Thesis for a candidate and a doctor degree in cardiology were defended at the Russian Cardiology Research and Production Center of the Health Care Ministry in 1987 and 1993, respectively. He was awarded the title of Professor of Cardiology in 1995. Up to 2005 he worked for the Branch of Institute of Cardiology of the Tomsk Scientific Center (Tyumen), Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences as a Head of the Department of Emergency Cardiology, Deputy Director on Scientific work. Since 2002 he heads the postgraduate Chair of Cardiology in Tyumen State Medical University. Since 2005 he works for the Tyumen Regional Clinical Hospital №1, where he presently works as the Head of the Center of the Heart and Blood Vessels. The Center is the basic structure of Tyumen Region Health Care responsible for the organization and provision of specialized (including hi-tech) medical care in cardiology, emergency cardiology, endovascular and cardiovascular surgery. The Centre is also a clinical base of the Tyumen State Medical University.
Prof. Shalaev is a member of the working group on the platform "cardiology and angiology" of the Scientific Council of Healthcare Ministry of the Russian Federation as well as a member of the profile Committee of Healthcare Ministry of the Russian Federation on the specialty "cardiology". Prof. Shalaev is a member of the Editorial Boards/Councils of a number of Russian professional journals such as "Rational Pharmacotherapy in Cardiology", "Cardiology", "Atherosclerosis and dyslipidemia", and "Emergency cardiac care", etc.
His professional and scientific interests are focused on emergency cardiology and acute coronary syndrome. He is an author of more than 500 publications on these subjects of cardiology; he also published several monographs and textbooks on cardiology. Nine doctoral and 52 candidate theses on cardiology were defended under his scientific leadership. Prof. Shalaev actively works in the field of evidence based cardiology, and is the main researcher of more than 40 completed and ongoing International randomized trials of the II-III phases.
For many years, Prof. Shalaev has been involved in the educational activities, including activities carried out in the framework of the National congresses, and conferences. He organizes congresses of cardiology of the Ural Federal District, and also the annual scientific conferences of cardiologists of Tyumen Region.
In 2006 the work of Prof. Shalaev as a scientist was marked by the Decree of the President of the Russian Federation on awarding the honorary title "Honored Worker of Science of the Russian Federation".
